Simple philosophy

My son and I share a passion for Japanese Anime. When I was his age, I used to get up early in the morning before school to watch cartoons, and I also used to collect comic books. In High School, I started to study martial arts and Japanese culture. Later, I developed a love of Anime, a Japanese term for animation.

Japanese anime characters have a distinct look and feel, including themes, artwork, storytelling, cultural nuances, and concepts. They are more complicated than Western comic book characters like Superman or Spider-man. An excellent Japanese Anime has superb character development and world-building, and some discuss philosophy and ideology in the form of storytelling.

In one story, “World Trigger,” a 15-year-old boy talks about the philosophy his father taught him when he was six. The boy’s father died when he was 11, but he shares these principles as a way to be close to the memory of his father. I will share those three principles with you:

You must be prepared to save yourself. Your parents won’t always be there to protect you. Improve your body through training, sharpen your wits, and try your best to get through tough times on your own. Don’t get involved with people who won’t do the same. When all else fails, use your imagination.

There is always another solution. Every question has multiple answers, and there are always problems with no solutions at all. Don’t get fixated on one method.
Never assume your father has the correct answer.

In short, you have to take responsibility for your life. You can’t assume someone will always be there to take care of you. Don’t get so fixated on a path that you lose sight of your goal. Chose your way, but if that doesn’t achieve your goal, don’t be afraid to choose another. You only fail when you give up.

As an attorney, I meet new people every week. Some weeks I meet with 50 or more people. Each person has made choices that got them where they are today. Some options were harmful to their goals, like committing crimes or fraud. Others relied on the help of the wrong person, like a notario or an attorney. Too many want to surrender their responsibility and want me to choose for them what to do. I don’t do that anymore. I now see my job as an educator, showing them their options, giving my opinion when asked, and helping them make their own choices. They need to live with those choices. The sooner they learn, the sooner they stop relying on people who exploit their ignorance. Knowledge is power. Never stop learning.
