Hey, Immigration Nation,
Last week, I experienced something that none of us ever want to go through – a car accident. While I was completely stopped, a commercial driver who wasn’t paying attention rear-ended the car behind me, which then slammed into my car. The photo below shows the aftermath – it looks like my car was run over.

After my initial shock and anger, frankly, I was ready to kill someone. I was at a complete stop, allowing another driver to make a turn when I was hit, and my initial reaction wasn’t pretty. But the woman who got out of the car explained that she was hit in the rear, and I saw the other driver was a man in his late 60s. I was able to calm down, and I did the following:
- Stay Calm and Prioritize Safety:
Don’t move the car unless it is a danger to yourself or others. Ideally, you want the police to see what happened. Few people take responsibility for their actions, so by not moving the vehicle, the police can get a better sense of what happened.
- Gather Comprehensive Evidence:
Document the scene with photos and videos, including vehicle damages and visible injuries. Exchange names, contact details, insurance information, and vehicle registration numbers with the other driver(s). Obtain contact information from any witnesses.
- Seek Prompt Medical Attention:
Even if you feel fine, get checked by a healthcare professional. Some injuries may not be immediately apparent, and a medical record will be crucial if you file a personal injury claim.
- Avoid Admitting Fault:
Try not to discuss details of the accident with the other driver or witnesses until you speak to an attorney. Provide necessary information only to law enforcement and your insurance company. Avoid giving recorded statements without consulting your attorney first.
- Contact a Personal Injury Attorney:
An experienced attorney can help you navigate the legal process, ensure your rights are protected, and maximize any compensation you may be entitled to. Seek legal advice as soon as possible after the accident.
Although we no longer practice personal injury law, if you are in an accident, we can help you find the representation you need and help you decide if you need an attorney – not everyone does.
Navigating the aftermath of a car accident can be overwhelming, but knowing the steps to take can make a significant difference in how the situation is resolved. Remember, we’re here to support you through every challenge.
Stay safe out there, and remember, we are all in this together.
Best regards,
Andres “Cautious” Mejer
