What is an SR22 / FR44 Insurance?
Following a conviction for DUI an SR22 / FR44 insurance is usually required. This is a form that needs to be filed by an insurance carrier, which is then sent off to the Motor Vehicle Commission. This form proves that the driver has the State’s minimum liability insurance coverage and meets the State’s minimum financial responsibility requirements
Basic
- $10,000 for two or more people in one accident
- $5,000 for property damage liability
- $15,000 bodily injury liability
Standard
- $15,000 bodily injury liability
- $30,000 for two or more people in one accident
- $5,000 for property damage liability
- $15,000 Personal Injury Protection
- $15,000 for uninsured/underinsured motorist injury
Basically, it provides a guarantee to the State that an insurance company has issued a high-risk driver with the minimum amount of liability insurance coverage required in order to drive a vehicle in that particular state. It is usually required for a period of three years after a DUI conviction. This gives insurance companies a reason to charge more, and some will charge a lot more than the required amount. The SR22/FR44 could become really expensive and tedious to have to deal with. This is why many advise speaking to a lawyer who is knowledgeable on DUI subject matters first. However, this could easily be avoided with simple precautions, such as not driving while consuming any alcohol. Just imagine all the money you could save.
