The Bible’s story of Noah is among the most widely known. At the root is the question of
Noah’s character. Is he wholly righteous and blameless? Or is he only considered
righteous in comparison with his wicked generation?
Genesis 6:9 describes Noah as a “righteous man, blameless in his age. Noah walked
with G-d.”
Commentators argue about Noah’s virtues and values, but he is a flawed character. At
heart is his response to G-d. Realizing how corrupt and lawless the earth had become,
G-d declares to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, as the earth has
become full of robbery...I am going to destroy them from the earth.” Genesis 6:13
(emphasis added) And how does Noah respond? Does he argue with G-d like Abraham,
fighting for the lives of his neighbors? No. Instead, Noah remains silent and does what
he is told.
It is not for me to decide whether Noah’s actions were appropriate; no one is perfect.
And how many people does G-d call righteous? I have read the story of Noah many
times. But seriously, how far-reaching are the consequences of robbery? The people of
Noah’s generation violated the prohibitions against idol worship, blasphemy, murder,
forbidden relations, animal cruelty, and the command to administer justice. But, robbery
sealed their fate? Did robbery destroy the entire world?

Designers of our immigration laws must have been biblical scholars because they agree
on the severity of robbery. Under federal law, robbery can be a crime of moral turpitude.
There is no concrete definition of a crime of moral turpitude, but it is considered a
depraved or immoral act. The consequences can result in deportation even for a green
card holder!
If you have been convicted or charged with a crime that might be “Robbery” –or an
immoral act–, do yourself a favor and call us immediately. Let’s ensure we get you the
defense you need or analyze the possibility of post-conviction relief to undo the
conviction.
