How We Can Help

Biometrics

Objective:

To guide immigrants through the biometrics process, which involves providing fingerprints and other biometric data to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) as part of your immigration case.

Step 1: Understanding the Biometrics Requirement

  • Purpose: To ensure you understand the importance of the biometrics appointment in your immigration process.
  • Actions:
    • Your Legal Assistant will explain why USCIS requires biometrics (fingerprints, photos, and/or signatures) and how it is used to verify your identity and check your background.
    • Understand that attending this appointment is mandatory and missing it can delay or negatively impact your case.

Step 2: Receiving the Biometrics Appointment Notice

  • Purpose: To be informed about your scheduled biometrics appointment.
  • Actions:
    • USCIS will send a notice with the date, time, and location of your biometrics appointment. This is usually referred to as an ASC (Application Support Center) appointment notice.
    • Your Legal Assistant will notify you as soon as the appointment notice is received and provide you with a copy.
    • Review the notice carefully to confirm the details and ask your Legal Assistant any questions you may have.

Step 3: Preparing for the Appointment

  • Purpose: To ensure you are ready for your biometrics appointment.
  • Actions:
    • Gather the required documents to bring to the appointment, including:
      • The ASC (Application Support Center) appointment notice
      • A valid photo ID (e.g., passport, driver’s license, or state ID)
      • Any additional documents requested in the appointment notice
    • Plan your travel to the ASC (Application Support Center) location ahead of time, ensuring you arrive on time for your appointment.
    • If you need to reschedule the appointment for any reason, inform your Legal Assistant immediately so they can assist with the rescheduling process.

Step 4: Attending the Biometrics Appointment

  • Purpose: To successfully complete the biometrics process at the ASC Legal Assistant.
  • Actions:
    • Arrive at the ASC on the scheduled date and time with all required documents.
    • Follow the instructions provided by the ASC (Application Support Center) staff to complete the biometrics process, which typically involves having your fingerprints, photograph, and signature taken.
    • The appointment is usually quick, taking around 15-30 minutes.

Step 5: Post-Appointment Steps

  • Purpose: To understand what happens after your biometrics are taken.
  • Actions:
    • After the appointment, USCIS will use your biometrics to conduct background checks and further process your case.
    • Your Legal Assistant will monitor the status of your case and keep you informed of any updates or next steps.
    • You can also check the status of your case online using the USCIS case status tool. Your attorney will provide you with instructions on how to do this.

Step 6: Monitoring Your Case Status

  • Purpose: To stay informed about the progress of your case after the biometrics appointment.
  • Actions:
    • Regularly check your case status online using the USCIS website. Your Legal Assistant will provide you with the necessary information to access this tool.
    • Keep in touch with your Legal Assistant for updates, especially if there are any changes or additional requirements from USCIS.
    • Be aware that after biometrics, USCIS may request more information or schedule further interviews, so stay prepared and responsive.

Step 7: Handling Issues or Concerns

  • Purpose: To address any issues that may arise after your biometrics appointment.
  • Actions:
    • If you encounter any problems with your biometrics appointment (e.g., unable to attend, technical issues at the ASC (Application Support Center)), inform your attorney immediately so they can assist in resolving the issue.
    • If you have concerns about the security of your biometric data, discuss them with your Legal Assistant, who can explain how USCIS protects your information.
